With thanks to John Robertson for supplying important details.
Tony relates a personal history about his grandfather, Arthur Noel Robertson, and the Battle of Monte Cassino, to mark its recent 70th anniversary. With thanks to John Robertson for supplying important details. The following painting is of "A patrol of 1/6th Bn The East Surrey Regiment entering Cassino with the Monastery above." Tony's grandfather is the soldier in the centre. The painting is dated 18th May, which is the day that Art was badly wounded. This photo is from the Queen's Royal Surreys website and is labelled for reuse by Google. If you're interested in reading more about The Battle of Monte Cassino, either of these books are worth a read.
